A/N: Inspired by National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day (August 8) and some nagging people, I mean friends, on Twitter. Also, this fits the "food and cooking" square on my trope_bingo card.

Jensen has not quite resigned himself to the fate of being the High King's second spouse when bandits strike. If he can get away from them, it might be his only chance for a life of his own. But once he finds out who the bandits' leader really is, everything will change, for himself and for his kingdom.

A/N: Written for a long-ago prompt at spn_kinkmeme that sat half-finished on my hard drive for years before getting way out of hand. (Doesn't that sound familiar?) So many thanks (all the thanks) to dugindeep for helping me brainstorm along the way and for taking on a last-minute beta job. The story is so much better thanks to her efforts, even if the butt-to-but ratio is still too low.

Summary: Thrust into leadership when his commanding officer is killed in battle, Jensen must offer the Akkadians' surrender to Corona, the rival planet his family used to rule. To make matters worse, his new Commander in Chief orders him to work with her son, someone he knew in a much simpler time. But the mission is critical: protecting the people of Akkad and Corona alike from an imminent sunstorm that threatens to finish what the war started.

Jared was raised to resent the Akkadians, having experienced their unfair rule for all of his life. It's been a long, hard struggle, but at last the Coronans are victorious. But as Jared learns more about what actually happened during the war, seeing with his own eyes what was done, he starts to question their victory. As he and Commander Ackles prepare for the deadly solar flares, Jared learns that the conflict he was proud to win was more complicated than he thought—and that for some people, the war isn't over yet.

A/N: Well, this has been a challenging fic to write. That's what I get for starting with the title (from the Lennon/Ono song) and hoping the rest would follow. So I have to start with huge thanks to wendy for not only running this wonderful challenge we all love, but for giving me the extra time to be able to finish. I'm also grateful to dugindeep and electricalgwen for their early encouragement and beta reading, assuring me I was on the right track (and bonus points to dugindeep for helping me with a crucial casting decision). Happy New Year! I'm in California this year, so I'll be one of the last people to enter 2016. In the meantime, here's that old year-end fic meme, updated for the current year.

Total word count: 207,754. Not as much as last year, and short of my 250K goal at Get Your Words Out, but still a lot. And I stuck to my goal of only writing in established 'verses except for comment!fic.
